Do-It-Yourself Lawn Care Tips. There are those who are impeccable with their lawns. They will not let one weed infest the perfect sea of lush grass, nor will there be stray grass creeping onto the sidewalk. There are those that prefer their lawn to be natural, weeds and all. No matter which category you may fall into, there are lawn care tips that will ensure that your lawn be just the way you envision it as the cold days give way to spring warmth and growth. Fertilize early, but not too often. If you prefer your lawn to be lush, green, and weed free, you will want to fertilize early in spring, late March or early April. Do not fertilize again; however, until mid-summer. If there are too many chemicals in your lawn, you run the risk of burning it and perhaps killing the lawn. A good way to promote new growth within your lawn is to either aerate it or thatch it. Either way, you are getting under the new growth and airing out the clumps that inevitably gather from older grasses. This promotes growth of new grass and will enhance your lawn.
On days that you cut your grass, do not cut it in the heat of the day. Instead, wait until the morning dew has dried up and then cut before the day gets warm. When cut in the heat of the day, it's easier for the grass to lose moisture that it would have retained had it been cut earlier. This will cause the grass to dry out and start yellowing. If you like green grass, cut early so that it may retain the moisture necessary for it to thrive. Also, be sure not to cut your grass too short. This will create the same problem as cutting in the heat of the day. In order for your lawn to retain its green luster, it must retain its moisture. Cutting too short will take that away. If weeding by hand, be sure that you get all the way to the root of the weed you're pulling. Some weeds will hang on pretty tightly, but if you're persistent, they will eventually lose their hold and come up. If the root is left down below, you will simply have a new weed to pull in a day or two. Make sure you get the entire weed, all the way down to its root. A trick to this will be to weed when the ground is still wet. Whether it be early when there is still dew or just after a rain, a wet ground will let go of a weed easier than a dry one. Lawns can be a pleasure and are enjoyed by family and friends alike. Your kids will play in it and your friends and family may come for a picnic in it. With a little care and attention, it can be the showpiece of your yard. |
